On February 9, 2018, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Wellness Council of Indiana announced the Indiana Workforce Recovery Initiative, a strategic partnership with Governor Eric Holcomb and his administration to combat the opioid epidemic.

The impact of drug abuse on Hoosiers, families and communities has been well documented. The Indiana University Kelley School of Business places the economic impact for Indiana of opioid misuse at $1.5 billion per year.  The NIH – National Institute of Drug Abuse puts the national economic burden at $78.5 billion.

The consequences of addiction have spread to the workplace, damaging Indiana’s economy. National researchers identify 58% of those suffering from drug addiction as being in the workforce.  The Indiana Workforce Recovery Initiative will empower the business community to play a lead role in combating this statewide crisis.

Objectives

  • Identify, evaluate and disseminate best practices in the workplace that support prevention, early identification, treatment and recovery
  • Educate employers and destigmatize the opioid crisis through increased awareness
  • Advocate for change in policy or statute to support business in its action to create and maintain a healthy workforce
