The Wellness Council of Indiana, in cooperation with the Indiana State Department of Health, Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission, is introducing a four-part webinar series: Educating Business Leaders in Addressing Tobacco in the Workplace.  The annual cost of a smoking employee is estimated to be $5,800 higher than a non-smoking employee.  This includes; over $2,000 more in healthcare costs, and over $3,500 more in lost productivity.  In this series, experts will dive into actions employers can take to best support smoking cessation in their workplace.

Part 1: Workplace Tobacco Policy – July 21: 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET

Tobacco cessation coverage saves employers money. Cessation treatment is the single most cost-effective health insurance benefit. Coverage increases both use of effective treatment and number of successful quit attempts. Return on investment for tobacco cessation treatments is positive after just one year. Medical cost savings begin to accrue after two years of providing a cessation benefit to employees.

Part 3: Workplace Cessation Programming – November 17: 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET

Employers play an important role in protecting the health and safety of their employees. Most Hoosier adults who smoke (69.6%) want to quit smoking. Employers can support their employees by creating a supportive workplace culture.

Part 4: Indiana Tobacco Quitline – January 26: 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET

The Indiana Tobacco Quitline (ITQL) is a free cessation service designed to help all Hoosier tobacco users. This resource offers phone, text and web-based services. ITQL staff are trained to work with Hoosiers who use all forms of tobacco products. Quit Now Indiana Preferred Employers have access to free resources and services to help employees to quit tobacco. Preferred Employers may also refer employees to the ITQL and receive monthly summaries of employee participation.
